Doble-Double (Repetition of Nicknames #PinoyExclusive)

Toto, Nene, Makmak, Junjun, Tintin, are some of the most popular repeated nicknames in the Philippines. According to Oxford Dictionary, the word nickname was came originally from the word
"aneke-name" , meaning an additional name. They are informal , usually easy to say. Because for other people, uttering the proper name it takes effort.

Filipinos are known as creative in many ways, whether in terms of art, science, music and even giving of nicknames, Pinoys are unique. Some of us doesn't have an idea where our unique nicknames came from and why our parents gave that nickname to us (unless if we gonna ask them), but one thing for sure, this is one of the things that make us unique as a Filipino. Filipinos are fun of giving nicknames, whether it sounds funny, cute or difficult to pronounce, as long as it identifies you.

Some parents make up a repetition of nickname as an endearment in addressing their children, but some have a stories about it. And to have more information regarding this topic, I decided to conduct an interview to a person who has a nickname which is repeated.

First Interview

My first interview was conducted at Talisay City. I interviewed a man that has a Karenderya (a kind of food stall). I'd noticed that the name of his stall is repeated.

Interviewer: The nga-a PaoPao hayu niya nong aw?

*According to Mr. Albert Alonzo,52 years old, that the story behind the nickname of his son Justin is his wife loves to eat siopao, and the name Paopao is came from that word.

Second Interview

Interviewer: Ta , nga-a Per-Pers name ka karenderya mo aw?
Interviewee: indi ni siya akon karenderya day, iya ni siya ka bayaw ko. Ang ngalan na Perper hayu Ina ka akon bayaw nga ang tuod niya na pangalan Percy.

*According to Mrs. Rosita Memba, Co-owner of Per-Pers eatery , located in Talisay City, she said, that repeated nickname was got from the real name itself of the owner.

Last Interview

Interviewer: Nga-a  Bokbok hayu mo haw?
Interviewee: (laughing) kay tambok tambok gid ko bi sang una kag asta subong, haha.

*According to Edward Tingson,21 years old,he said that his nickname was based on his physical appearance before.

Our nickname is part of our life. It occupies a large place to distinguish of who we are. It helps to identify ourselves from the others,in similar way, people use this to recognize you. So whether you have a repeated nickname or not, one thing is for sure.... your nickname can say a lot about you!
